This summer school is part of the OneMath World School, a global effort coordinating several mathematics institutes to organise schools on emerging topics in mathematics. It is a collaboration among several institutes:
- Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO), Mexico
- Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), India
- Institute of Mathematics of Granada (IMAG), Spain
- Brin Mathematics Research Center (BMRC), USA
- Intelligent Analytics (IA) at UBC-Okanagan, Canada
- Banff International Research Station (BIRS), Canada
We are pleased to invite graduate students to apply for consideration to attend the OneMath World School, scheduled June 22-26, 2026 at the Brin Mathematical Research Center, University of Maryland, College Park. The school will provide graduate students with an integrated introduction to state-of-the-art theory, methodologies, and computational tools in modern mathematical biology. The central theme, which is based on the synthesis of mathematical modeling, statistics, machine learning, entails the design, analysis, calibration, and simulations of mathematical models (mechanistic, statistical, machine learning and hybrid versions) for gaining insight into the transmission dynamics and control of emerging and re-emerging communicable and non-communicable diseases of major public health significance. Advanced techniques for data-driven model discovery, parameter estimation, deep learning and data analytics (including geometric and topological approaches) will be discussed. In addition to featuring lectures and hands-on tutorials by leading experts (including guest speakers), the school will also feature team research projects. The research teams will conduct their project during the week, and present it on the final day.
To support effective participation, the School will offer online tutorial preparatory sessions during the week prior to the main program (June 15–19, 2026) to introduce (or re-familiarize) the participants with the key background concepts and techniques on mathematical modeling of human diseases, and the pertinent computational, statistical, and machine learning tools needed during the week. Potential team research projects will also be presented.
Details about applications for the School are available at the website https://www.mathprograms.org/db/programs/1857. Application materials (must be submitted through the mathprograms link): Each applicant must provide a current CV, a cover letter (maximum 2 pages) detailing relevant research experience and a statement of how the summer school will benefit their research, and a letter of recommendation. The cover letter should include a commitment to attend the summer school in its entirety. The deadline for submission of an application is February 15, 2026.
